Project 1882
Animals as family members

Adopting animals

Project 1882 wants to encourage those who have the opportunity to expand their family with an animal to adopt homeless individuals from shelters or organisations. Adopting an animal doesn’t change the entire world. But it can change someone’s entire world.

Aside from giving an animal a secure future, you also contribute to changing the attitude toward animals in society. For every animal who gets a home, possibility is created for the animal shelter to accept and help yet another homeless animal.

Project 1882 advocates for family animals by:

  • Informing the public about the benefits of adopting homeless animals and spreading knowledge about the needs of the animals. No animals feel good living in cages.
  • Putting pressure on politicians and authorities in matters regarding family animals. For example, Project 1882 was a driving force in the efforts to put in place the mandatory identification and registration of cats which became a reality during 2023 in Sweden.
  • Making it easier to find reputable organisations working to rehome homeless animals in Sweden, via the rehoming register.

To think about when adopting animals

Before you bring a new family member into your life, it may be wise to read up about the species of animal that you are thinking about inviting to your home. Do you have the knowledge, time and money needed to give this particular animal a good life? Provided here is a checklist that Project 1882 recommend you to use before adopting a homeless animal:

  • Knowledge about the species of animal.
  • The individual animal’s life history and specific needs.
  • Veterinary inspection.
  • Vaccinations.
  • Transfer agreement.
  • Identity markings (dogs, cats, rabbits and horses).
  • Insurance.
