In the fur industry, animals are bred and killed simply because people want to wear their fur. Animals are kept in cramped cages and their living conditions are very different from the life they are adapted to. It doesn't have to be this way. Project 1882 is working for the dismantling of the fur industry and the fur trade.
There are still millions of minks on fur farms in Europe today. Most mink only live to be six months old and live their entire lives in small wire cages. It doesn't have to be like this. Project 1882 is working to phase out mink farms.
The number of mink farms in Europe has been reduced from tens of thousands to less than 1000 over the past 50 years. But the remaining farms have grown larger, and every year over 7 million mink are born in wire cages and slaughtered at the age of six months. This is solely for their fur which is sold for luxury consumption in Asia.
The fur industry was introduced to Europe in the early 1900s and grew rapidly. Foxes, mink and chinchillas were kept in small cages to sell their fur. Since then, thanks to Project 1882 and the global alliance of other animal rights organisations, animal welfare concerns have become more prominent in society and several investigations have led to restrictions and the phasing out of most of the fur farms.
There are still millions of fur animals farmed in Europe, but a large part of the fur industry has been phased out due to production bans and fur free retailers.
In the fur industry, animals are bred and killed simply because people want to wear their fur. Fur is still imported to European countries regardless of production bans. It doesn't have to be like this.
Animals in the fur industry are bred, live a few months and then are slaughtered for their fur. The rest of the body is rarely used. It is a horrible industry that is used to satisfy the demand for luxury goods and details in clothing, in which millions of animals are put to death.
