Project 1882 celebrates a major victory for wildlife protection in Ukraine

Project 1882 is proud to announce a significant step forward in wildlife protection in Ukraine. Thanks to consultations and cooperation with Project 1882 Ukraine, OLX, one of Ukraine’s largest online platforms for private ads, has announced a ban on publishing ads for the sale of exotic animals.

As one of Ukraine’s most popular classified ad services, OLX attracts around 18.5 million users weekly, providing a platform for people in Ukraine to buy and sell everything from cars and real estate to household items and clothing. However, this popularity has also made OLX a hub for users to sell animals, including exotic species. Unfortunately, not all users conscientiously comply with wildlife protection laws, leading to illegal trade that threatens wild and exotic animals.

To address this issue, Project 1882 provided OLX with advice on Ukrainian and international laws protecting wildlife. Thanks to long-term cooperation and a number of consultations with Project 1882, the platform now bans ads for wild and exotic animals, except for a certain regulated list, resulting in the removal of thousands of ads.

– This policy change is a critical step forward in combating the illegal wildlife trade in Ukraine. We are proud to have supported OLX in making this decision, which aligns with both national legislation and international law, and are glad that there are now fewer avenues for illegal animal trade, says Hanna Tereshko, Director of Project 1882 Ukraine.

Project 1882 applauds this decision by OLX and remains committed to continuing the international work for animal rights. Together, we are making strides toward a better future for Ukraine’s wildlife.
