Stena Line says no to Frankenchickens

The ferry company Stena Line is the next company to say no Frankenchickens by adopting the European Chicken Commitment (ECC). Finnlines and Destination Gotland have already committed to the ECC but statements are still missing from giant players Tallink Silja, TT-Line and Viking Line.

The next company to say no to Frankenchickens by adopting the ECC is Stena Line. The decision includes all their operations in Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Poland, the Netherlands, the UK, Latvia, Lithuania and Germany and will be implemented by 2026. The commitment comes after a long dialogue with Project 1882.

 – The importance of more and more companies saying no to the use of Frankenchickens cannot be emphasized enough. Animals in factory farms suffer enormously, and companies have both an opportunity and a responsibility to change this. ECC must be seen as the absolute minimum level. We are pleased that Stena Line is taking this important step, says Nathalie Söderström, Director of Corporate Relations at Project 1882.

The other ferry companies Finnlines and Destination Gotland have already adopted the ECC after dialog with Project 1882. However, neither Tallink Silja, TT-Line nor Viking Line have yet chosen to say no to Frankenchickens. Project 1882 hopes that they will do the same shortly.

About the European Chicken Commitment

The ECC is a set of welfare criteria for companies to include in their purchasing requirements. The criteria include saying no to Frankenchickens that grow so fast that it hurts them, and yes to more space in the chicken factories. The criteria are based on the latest research on animal welfare and need to be seen as the absolute minimum level. Last year, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) published its reports on the welfare of chickens in factory farms. In the the report, they have strong conclusions about chickens that align with the ECC but in many cases go much further than that.

How does Project 1882 work for the chickens?

Project 1882 is working actively to ensure better conditions for chickens and to reduce the killing. Among other things, we get companies to take more responsibility for the chickens through ECC, and work to get companies to drastically reduce their purchases of chicken meat. We inform the public about the animals' situation and put pressure on politicians and authorities to get them to change the laws that affect the chickens. Project 1882 also runs the inspiration website Välj Vego (Choose Vego).

What can you do as a consumer?

The best thing you can do as a consumer is to not eat chicken at all. Välj Vego (Choose Vego) offers chicken-free recipes and tips on how to replace chicken with plant-based options.
