Viking Line has made the decision to stop using Frankenchickens and start working with the European Chicken Commitment (ECC) in Sweden, Finland and Estland. This means that the company will stop buying chickens that grow at an accelerated rate which results in pain, disease and an early death, and that the company supports more space for the chickens in factory farms. This decision was made after conversations with Project 1882.
Viking Line is the next company in line to start working with the European Chicken Commitment (ECC) after talking to Project 1882, joining Finnlines, Stena Line, and Destination Gotland. About 6 million people travel with Viking Line each year, which means that their choice will affect a lot of animals. This decision includes all of the company's operations in Sweden, Finland and Estonia.
By saying no to Frankenchickens and demanding certain standards in methods of anaesthesia, the company makes a stand against the systematic deficits in the living conditions for the animals in factory farms. These are important first steps, but the criteria from the ECC on animal welfare constitute the bare minimum in terms of the well-being of chickens. The best thing to do for the chickens is to decide not to eat them. Fill your plate with plant-based foods instead.
− We are happy that Viking Line has chosen to say no to Frankenchickens. Now we would like Tallink Silja and TT-line to follow, and we will continue our dialogue with them to make this happen, says Nathalie Söderström, Director of Corporate Relations at Project 1882.
Project 1882 works towards both better living conditions in the chicken factory farms and to minimize the killing of chickens. This is achieved by encouraging companies to take greater responsibility for chicken welfare through the ECC as well as urging corporations to significantly reduce their purchases of chickens. We educate and inform the public about the living conditions of chickens, and put pressure on politicians and policymakers to make changes in the laws that govern the chickens' lives.
Project 1882 strives for a world where every life matters. By supporting our work, you help make that vision become a reality.
