What we do

Animals as family members

Animals living with humans should be treated as beloved family members according to the needs of the animals. Project 1882 urges everyone thinking of sharing their homes with animals to adopt homeless individuals from shelters or organisations.

Project 1882 advocates for animals as family members by:

  • Informing the public about the benefits of adopting homeless animals and spreading knowledge about the needs of the animals. No animals feel good living in cages.
  • Putting pressure on politicians and authorities in matters regarding family animals. For example, Project 1882 was a driving force in the efforts to put in place the mandatory identity marking and registration of cats which became a reality during 2023 in Sweden.
  • Making it easier to find reputable organisations working to rehome homeless animals in Sweden, via the rehoming register.

Adopting animals

Project 1882 wants to encourage those who have the opportunity to expand their family with an animal to adopt a homeless animal and give them a secure life. Adopting an animal doesn’t change the entire world. But it can change someone’s entire world.

Read more about what is good to keep in mind when adopting animals via the link below. There you can find Project 1882’s rehoming register where you can get more information about how you can adopt a new family member.

Cats

Project 1882 works to decrease homelessness among cats and advocates that they should become a more natural part of their human families. Cats are one of the most common animals to have as family members in the EU, yet to this day many of them experience homelessness.

Among other things, Project 1882 advocated for the requirement of mandatory marking and registration of cats which became a reality the 1st of January 2023 in Sweden. We are encouraged by this since it can decrease homelessness and increase the status of cats.

Dogs

It is often said that dogs are humans’ best friends. Yet dogs are still left alone for long periods of the day and are subjected to punishments. Dogs are also subjected to extreme breeding for various appearances and in recent years an increase in the smuggling of different breeds has occurred, with tragic consequences.

Animals living with humans should be treated as beloved family members according to the needs of the animals. Project 1882 urges everyone thinking of sharing their homes with a dog to adopt homeless individuals from shelters or organisations.

The pet trade

Pet stores with living animals contribute to impulse purchases. The low cost also makes it easy to replace one deceased individual with a new one. That the animals are portrayed as easy to care for can be confused with the fact that it is not necessary to have knowledge about their needs. Simultaneously, inadequate information about care practices is given and exotic animals fall into the wrong hands.

Knowledge is needed to ensure that animals living with humans are treated as beloved family members according to the needs of the animals. Project 1882 advocates limiting the trade in live animals, as well as introducing a positive list of which species are allowed to be kept in captivity as family animals.
